The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed him commander over a detachment. He said: I went out along with it. He (the Prophet) said: If you find so-and-so, burn him with the fire. I then turned away, and he called me. So I returned to him, and he said: If you find so-and-so, kill him, and do not burn him, for no one punishes with fire except the Lord of the fire. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2673)   

أحمد:١٦٠٣٤ – حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيُّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَمَّرَهُ عَلَى سَرِيَّةٍ فَخَرَجْتُ فِيهَا فَقَالَ إِنْ أَخَذْتُمْ فُلَانًا فَأَحْرِقُوهُ بِالنَّارِ فَلَمَّا وَلَّيْتُ نَادَانِي فَقَالَ إِنْ أَخَذْتُمُوهُ فَاقْتُلُوهُ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُعَذِّبُ بِالنَّارِ إِلَّا رَبُّ النَّارِ
