This tradition has also been narrated by Ya’la bin Umayyah through a different chain of narrators. This version adds The Prophet ﷺ said to him “Take off your tunic”. He then took it off from his head. The narrator then narrated the rest of the tradition.  

أبو داود:١٨٢٠حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنْ يَعْلَى بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ وَهُشَيْمٌ عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَعْلَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ بِهَذِهِ الْقِصَّةِ قَالَ فِيهِ فَقَالَ

لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ اخْلَعْ جُبَّتَكَ فَخَلَعَهَا مِنْ رَأْسِهِ وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ
